The Department

The Centre for Himalayan Studies, University of North Bengal is an Area Studies Centre funded by the University Grants Commission under Area Studies Programme. It was established on 11th December, 1978. Since its inception the Centre’s research strategy has been aimed mainly at studying the Himalayan history, geography, economy, society, polity in general and the environment, development, people and culture in particular in the Eastern Himalayan region. The Centre has regular M. Phil. and Ph. D. programmes in Himalayan Studies/Area Studies. Since 2005, the Centre has started a two year post-graduate programme in Strategic and Area Studies. The first batch of twelve students graduated in 2007. The course is multi-disciplinary, and honours graduates from all branches of Social Science, namely, History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Sociology can join the course. In addition, graduate defence personnel are also admitted. The Centre receives grant from the University Grants Commission under its Area Studies Programme. The grant is utilized by undertaking various field-based research projects, inviting visiting faculty from different parts of the country, organizing seminars and special lectures, purchasing books, journals, documents and equipments, publishing journals and serials. The Centre has a Documentation Cell which collects and stores published and unpublished documents, e-resources, newspaper clippings, periodicals, journals and books on the Eastern Himalayas and caters to eclectic researchers interested in Himalayan Studies.

Research Profile:

The Centre undertakes multidisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary social-scientific researches on emergent socio-politico-economic issues in Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling Hills, Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining areas of Tibet Autonomous Region. The Centre has so far produced about 30 Ph.Ds and more than 50 M.Phils.
Journal:The Centre publishes its journal The Himalayan Miscellany annually. Till date the Centre has published 21 volumes of the journal.

Events(Seminar, Workshop, Symposium, etc.):

The Centre organizes National Seminars, Workshops, etc. almost every alternate year and organizes Special Lectures by scholars from Indian and Foreign Universities every year.
