The Department:

The Department of Philosophy, University of North Bengal has been awarded Special Assistance by UGC to carry on research on ‘The Problem of Meaning in Classical Indian Philosophy and Contemporary Western Philosophy’  including translation of Sanskrit texts into regional language.

Department of Philosophy, North Bengal University, Siliguri, is one of the very accomplished centers of learning and research in Philosophy.  Siliguri is surrounded by four countries and the nearest Bagdogra airport is five KM, and the New Jalpaiguri railway station is 18 KM away from University campus.  We pride ourselves in being a department where equal emphasis is placed on quality research as well as on development and training of students through teaching/learning and extensive teacher-student interaction.

Classical and Contemporary Indian Philosophy and Western Philosophy (From Ancient to Contemporary Period)

The compulsory papers comprise of basic themes in philosophy as epistemology, metaphysics, Ethics (both theoretical and applied), logic, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Post-modernism and Indian philosophy (classical and modern). Under each optional paper there are several alternatives to choose from, giving the students a scope to specialize in a particular direction as well as to acquaint themselves with new developments in the subject. There are 24 papers of 50 marks each. The total marks is 1600 of which 100 marks in each Semester are set aside for internal evaluation, such as:

  1. Seminar presentation & group discussions (25 marks)
  2. Tutorial taken by each individual teacher (25 marks)
  3. Comprehensive viva voce (50marks) is conducted at the end of the written examination of each semester.

Compulsory papers :
Epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, postmodernism, continental philosophy and Indian philosophy (classical and modern).
Optional papers:
There are several alternatives to choose from, giving the students a scope to specialize in a particular direction as well as to acquaint themselves with new developments in the subject. The course is designed to relate philosophy to practical situations of life.

The department also runs a successful Ph.D. and M.Phil Programme. About 40 PhD dissertations have been supervised by the teachers. At present there are about 22 registered Ph.D. scholars and 50 course work students in the Department. About a similar number of M.Phil students completed their dissertations over the years.
