Events (i.e. seminar, workshop, symposium etc):

Academic events are regularly organized in the department funded by UGC-SAP, ICPR and other national level institutions

  1. In 2003 the Department organized second National level workshop under Special Assistance Programme.
  2. In 2004 the Department organized third National level workshop under Special Assistance Programme,
  3. In 2005 the Department organized a UGC-sponsored National Seminar on “Ethics in Theory and Practice”.
  4. In 2005 the ICPR-sponsored National Seminar on ”Language, Understanding and Interpretation: Hermeneutics From an East-West Perspective”, was organized by the Department
  5. In 2005 one Seminar was organized to mark the inauguration of the Centre for Ambedkar Study,
  6. The biggest event in the history of this Department is the holding of the   80th Session of the prestigious Indian Philosophical Congress from 24th to 27th October 2005, inaugurated by the Governor of West Bengal. His Excellency Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Professor D.P. Chattopadhyaya, Padmabhusan, having graced the inaugural session as chairman, Some 450 delegates attended the four day long session.
  7. In 2006 the Department organized fourth National level workshop under Special Assistance Programme,
  8. In 2006 the Department organized one National level seminar on ‘Ambedkar’s Socio-Political Thought
  9. In 2006 the Department organized one National level seminar on ‘Buddhism in Socio-ethical Perspective’’
  10. In 2007-08 the Department organized one National level seminar on ‘Man and Society in Buddhism and Ambedkar.
  11. In 2008 the Department organized one National level seminar on Moral Language: East and West under Special Assistance Programme
  12. The Department organized Five (05) Refresher Courses keeping in mind the need of large number of teachers working in the affiliated colleges in the region.
  13. From 2003 till date large numbers of renowned professors from all the regions of India and sometimes from abroad visited the Department and delivered lectures as visiting professors. Within last five years approximately 40 visiting professors visited the Department which gave an excellent opportunity to the students and also the faculty members for an exposure.

Seven workshops have been arranged in last six years with the fund provided for this purpose. The first one was held in November 2002 on the topic: ‘Theories of Meaning: Indian and Western’ in which apart from my colleagues of the University and of the affiliated colleges many well known scholars like Professor Pradyot Kumar Mukhopadhyaya (Jadavpur University), Professor Hiranmoy Bandyopadhyaya (Jadavpur University), Dr. Madhabendranath Mitra (Jadavpur University), Dr. Sadhan Chakraborty, Jadavpur University, Professor Nandita Bandyopadhyaya of Sanskrit Department, Jadavpur University, Dr. Rupa Bandyopadhyaya of Rabindra Bharati University, Professor Tandra Patnaiyak of Utkal University, Dr. Santosh Kumar Pal of Burdwan University, Dr. P. Prabhu from Pondicerry University, Professor Bonode Kumar Agarwal from Lucknow University, Professor S.R.Bhatt from Delhi University had attended and presented their learned papers.
The second National level workshop on Meaning and Representation was organized under the auspices of SAP in January 2004 in which apart from our colleagues and teachers of the affiliated colleges many reputed Professors like Professor D. N. Tiwary of Dwarbhanga University, Professor Surendra Mohan Mishra of Sanskrit Department, Kurukshetra University, Dr. Bijoy Mukherjee of Visvabharati, Dr. Ranjan Mukhopadhyaya of Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, Dr. (Mrs) Madhucchanda Sen of Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, Dr. Soumitra Basu of Jadavpur University, Kolkata had attended and presented their learned papers. Apart from the guest-speakers Professor Chandidas Bhattacharya of the University of North Bengal, Sm. Saswati Chakraborty of P.D. Women’s College affiliated to our University and Dr. Benulal Dhar of Sukanta Mahavidyalaya affiliated to NBU had presented papers in the seminar, which generated many questions among the audience.
The third workshop on Language, Thought & Reality had been arranged from the 19th to 21st January 2005 in which, apart from our Departmental colleagues and college teachers Professor Franson Manjali (English literature and Language of JNU), Dr.Manidipa Sen (Philosophy Department, JNU), Professor Ratna Datta Sharma (Jadavpur University), Dr. Gangadhar Kar (Jadavpur University), Professor Jagat Pal (North Eastern Hill University), Dr. Rakesh Chandra (Lucknow University), Professor P.R. Bhatt (I.I.T. Bombay) and Dr. Kaushik Bhattacharyya (Visva-Bharati) had presented their learned papers. Colleagues from other Departments, research scholars and students had actively participated in the seminar generating many questions among the audience. An open session was arranged for the younger generation who raised many interesting issues regarding language, thought and reality.
The fourth workshop on Language and Communication had been arranged in 2006 in which many distinguished scholars like Professor Ranjan K. Ghosh, Former Director, ICPR, New Delhi, Professor Gopalan Mallick, Department of Film Studies, St.Xavier’s College, Kolkata, Professor Bijaya Goswami, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Dr. Arundhati Mukherjee, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Professor D.N. Tiwari, Darbhanga University etc had presented their learned papers. An open session was arranged for the younger generation who raised many interesting issues regarding language.
The fifth workshop on Language and Grammar held in the month of March 2007 became very much interesting because many grammarians of the country joined in the workshop leading to serious discussion on various issues on Language and Grammar. In this workshop Dr. Surendra Mohun Mishra, Deapartment of Sanskrit, Kurukshetra University, Professor Rekha Janjhi, Retired Professor, Department of Philosophy, Panjub University, Chandigarh, Professor Pradyot Mukhopadhyaya, Retired Professor of Philosophy, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Professor Patralekha Mitra, Department of Philosophy, South Calcutta Girls’ College, Professor Pradip Mazumdar, Retired Professor, Barasat Govt. College, Kolkata, Professor Emmanuel, Department of Philosophy, Suvidya College, Bangalore, and Professor D.N. Tiwari, Department of Philosophy, Darbhanga University  etc have presented their valuable papers and took part in the discussions.
The sixth workshop on Moral Language held in the month of March 2008 was attended by the scholars like Dr. Nirmalya Narayan Chakraboty, Rabindra Bharati University, Professor Sampadananda Mishra fro Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, Professor Adity Mohanty, Durector, CAS in Philosophy, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Dr. Monidipa Sanyal, Calcutta University, Professor Indrani Sanyal, Jadavpur University, Kolkata , Professor Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, Jadavpur University Kolkata etc.

During the last three years the following scholars have visited our Department as Visiting Fellows and delivered lectures on the thrust area.
