The Department

Since establishment in 1984, the department flourished with tireless efforts of faculties, staff and students. The course curriculum of the department has always been strong and forward looking. Syllabi have been revised regularly and the latest version was done with the introduction of semester system offering five special papers, namely Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Molecular Plant pathology and Fungal Biotechnology, Plant Biochemistry and Taxonomy of Angiosperms and Biosystematics. One of the strong points of the department has been eminence in research. Late Professor Kalyan Bandhu Dutta was deeply interested in the study of human genetics and micropropagation of orchids. Professor Prabhat Kumar Basu was mainly engaged with the pharmacognosy and physiology of medicinal plants. Contribution in the area food fermentation, quality and safety by Professor Prabir Kumar Sarkar is noteworthy. Professor Bishwanath Chakraborty has been working in the area of plant defence and immunodiagnostics. Professor Usha Chakraborty has been involved in the research on elucidation of biochemical mechanism of plants’ response to biotic and abiotic stress, as well as plant growth promotion through microbes. Professor Abhaya Prasad Das has done considerable work in the exploration and conservation of plant diversity, biosystematics, ethno-botany and medicinal plants. Dr. Aniruddha Saha has been involved in plant-microbe interaction. Dr. Arnab Sen is carrying forward plant tissue culture, molecular genetics, transgenics and bioinformatics. Mr. Palash Mandal is engaged in physiology and antioxidant biochemistry of plants. Dr. Subhas Chandra Roy is carrying out research in the areas of rice genomics. In recognition of the research outcome, the department is continuing Special Assistance Programme (SAP-DRS) of UGC since 2002 and DST- FIST.
