The Department

The Department of Tea Science the only UGC approved department. of its kind in the country was established in the year 1995 with a professional course in Tea Management on self financing basis and has been gradually developed today to provide the courses of M.Sc. (in early 2010), M. Phil and PhD programme apart from the Post Graduate diploma course. The primary focus of the department is to educate our students to strengthen the backbone of the Tea Industries and to add performance for the overall growth of them in this northern part of West Bengal and other tea growing parts as well of our country. The course curriculum and research programmes have been introduced in an updated version of Tea Science to meet the present needs. The department has a Tea Board approved soil analysis laboratory to do the R & D work in the subject and to provide the scientific need of the tea industries to improve the level of production and quality of the finished products. In addition, the departmental faculties are associated with several laboratories namely Tissue Culture, Molecular Biology, Tea Chemistry and Pharmacology, Tea Taxonomy and Ecology to enrich them for the benefit of the students.

The department organizes training programmes/workshops for small tea growers, seminars, student training programmes, refresher courses, Industry - University meet (Tea Link) in regular intervals. The department also provide training programme for the aspirants from European and other Asian countries. We do arrange campus interview in regular intervals (once or twice in a year) for the placement of our M.Sc and P G diploma students and as a consequence the students from our department are now posted in various eminent positions. We are delighted to mention that the PGDTM and the M.Sc. students from our dept. gets 100% placement every year.

The department is well equipped with various instruments to facilitate the research and developmental work related to Tea Science and allied subjects. We do run joint research projects with our sister departments like Chemistry, Botany, Bioinformatics etc. A combination of highly educated, well experienced along with dynamic young faculties are the academic strength of the department. Invited experienced Visiting faculties from the industries, Tea associations and Tea Boards educate the students in the positive direction to build their carrier as per the need of the industries for the benefit of the nation.

Constant R and D activities of the department is reflected in the published research articles in reputed national and international research journals from the various research groups of the department.
