The National policy of Education 1986, of Government of India recognized the necessity of improving the quality of teaching in higher education by linking it with teacher motivation. It proposed to provide opportunities to teachers for professional and career development enabling them to fulfill their role and responsibility in the arena of higher education. Keeping this objective in mind the UGC took initiative to set up Academic Staff Colleges (ASCs) in some selected universities in the country. Most of the staff colleges were established in the late Eighties.
However, in the XIIth plan guidelines (2015-16), the ASC has been renamed as HRDC (Human Resource Development Centre). The UGC-HRDC, NBU since its inception from November, 2009 has conducted as many as 67 Refresher Courses, 25 Orientation Programmes, many short term courses / workshops (2 – 7 days) with outmost success. Participants from various parts of Country, such as Maharshtra, Haryana, Punjab, New Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Bihar and the entire North-East states were being taken part in various courses in the Centre over the years. The Centre has highly been applauded by the Participants taking part in various courses. The academic outcome of the Centre has also been appreciated by Resource Persons invited here for delivering lectures in various courses. In short, the Centre has completed Eight more glories years by conducting various courses under the financial assistance of UGC-HRDC. The Centre is equally committed to uplift the standard step by step towards providing better academic facilities in every respect.
The Centre over the years has been receivingcooperation from all sections of the University of North Bengal. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) SomnathGhosh has always been much kind to approve sufficient fund as advance in order to avoid any disruption in regular academic schedule. The HRDC is much indebted to the authority for this gesture of generosity.
The UGC-HRDC, NBU also gets locational benefits. Even though it is situated far away from Kolkata, but at the same time it is located very adjacent to Darjeeling and to the womb of Kanchenjunga. It is the gateway of North East states. Besides, the environment of North Bengal University is equally good for outstation participants who will come over here to take part in various courses in this Centre. The Centre has an independent Guest House in which Participants while taking part in various courses will stay comfortably. On behalf of UGC-HRDC, NBU Prof. Kantilal Das, the Director (Additional Charge), Dr. ManishaJha, Deputy Director (Additional Charge) and Dr. Sujit Kumar Biswas, Assistant Director (Honoarary), will feel privilege to invite the Participants to come over here by way of taking part in various courses offered by UGC-HRDC, NBU in the forthcoming years.
