UNIVERSITY OF NORTH BENGAL
North Bengal University is an active centre of research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology. The department of physics introduced General Relativity and Cosmology for a long time in Master degree Program. Recently the Astrophysics and Cosmology courses are introduced not only in M. Sc. But also in Ph. D. Program. The department is an active centre for research in Theoretical Physics particularly, Astrophysics, Data Analysis of X-ray Sources and Cosmology. In Astrophysics compact objects namely, neutron star, strange star, Black hole, wormhole, X-ray Binaries are investigated. In cosmology research at the centre is carried out to study Problems of Early universe, Accelerating universe, Dark Energy, Dark matter and Modified gravity. In astrophysics and cosmology a total of 15 Ph. D.s came out in the department since 2000. A number of M. Sc. Students from different universities did internship. At present there are eight in house scholars working for their Ph. D. degree using the facilities of ICARD. Eminent Astrophysicists and Cosmologists visit the Centre from IUCAA and other institutes in India and Abroad. ICARD has a vibrating visiting program and organize seminar/symposium/Group discussion/school time to time.
The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is an autonomous institution set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to promote the nucleation and growth of active groups in astronomy and astrophysics at Indian universities. IUCAA aims to be a centre of excellence within the university sector for teaching, research and development in astronomy and astrophysics. For the last three decades, IUCAA has been promoting Astronomy and Astrophysics in Universities and Colleges across the country. There are a number of teachers from University and Colleges who use IUCAA facilities and research expertise to enhance their own research and to convey that knowledge and excitement at their institutes. Since its inception in 1988, it has become the nodal agency for research, teaching and science popularization activities in the country in the field of Astronomy & Astrophysics and allied fields. IUCAA set up six Reference Centers (IRC) in India which would provide some basic facilities to university or college teachers and students in different regions for working in projects related to Astronomy &Astrophysics. IUCAA Resource Centres (IRCs) provide up to date modern computing facilities, books and necessary software which are utilized by students and researchers of the nearby region. Every year, a number of IUCAA sponsored workshops/seminars are arranged directly, or through IRC, in various Universities.

Seminar & Conference
IRC at North Bengal University (NBU) is one of such Centre started functioning from July 31, 1999 under the leadership of Prof. S. Mukherjee (Ex-Professor, NBU). Thereafter IRC DATA Centre was inaugurated by Prof. A. Basumajumdar, Vice-Chancellor, NBU on February 21, 2011. The computers, storage devices and Ups are supplied by IUCAA, Pune for the DATA centre. An MOU is signed by IUCAA, Pune and North Bengal University to carry forward the program.
Recently, the name of IRC is changed to IUCAA Centre for Astronomy Research and Development (ICARD) which is housed at Physics Department, NBU which is effective from 31st March, 2019. With this achievement, we hope that our department will soon turn into an active center for Astronomy research & development through Astronomy teaching, promoting research and getting involved in public outreach program. IUCAA set up total seventeen ICARD across India; ICARD NBU is one of them. IRC North Bengal University started functioning under the leadership of Prof. Sailojananda Mukherjee. IRC, NBU is already engaged in all these activities since last three decades and has a very active association with IUCAA. Being ICARD, this bonding will flourish with much enhanced Astronomy activities in West Bengal and North Eastern India.
