Thirty two Professors of various Universities have visited different Departments of our University and delivered lectures. Teachers of various Departments of this University have published more than 563 books and articles/papers in refereed National and International Journals. One hundred and four faculty members have visited various Universities within our country and nine faculty members have visited various Universities of abroad to attend seminars, deliver lectures and on exchange Programmes with the Assistance of UGC’s fund and there are a considerable number of teachers who visited abroad in connection with various academic programmes sponsored by other funding authorities like DST, ICSSR, DAAD, host institutions etc.

Twenty three Departments of the Arts, Commerce, and Law Faculty as well as of Science Faculty have organized 58 numbers of Seminars and Workshops during the year 2013-2014. In the UGC NET Examination (June 2013) thirty four Students were selected as Junior Research Fellow and one hundred and sixty eight Students qualified for Lectureship (December 2013) and twenty Students were selected as Junior Research Fellow and one hundred sixty four Students qualified for Lectureship. Three hundred and eighty six students passed UGC NET Examination in 2013-14. Our Examination Branch has to conduct 179 types of Examinations annually, thereby, catering to around 2,00,000 students per year.

To encourage the students, the following Scholarships have been given:
1. Post-Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child
2. Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holder
3. UGC Junior Research Fellowship
4. UGC- Basic Science and Research Fellowship
5. UGC- Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship etc

Five new colleges were established during the academic session 2013-14, which is affiliated to the University of North Bengal. Three Departments of the Arts, Commerce, and Law Faculty as well as of Science Faculty have received five numbers of Awards during the year 2013-2014. Department of Mathematics received a grant of Rs. 7,90,000/- from NBHM (National Board for Higher Mathematics) for the Departmental Library in 2013-14.

We have started Master Degree Course in Rural Development under the Department of Lifelong Learning & Extension. We have a Documentation Cell in the Centre for Himalayan Studies. The Documentation Officer works with the objective to document all the major developments of the region and disseminate the information through publications. All the major developments in the region are recorded and documented in the Area Reports. The High Energy & Cosmic Ray Research Centre is engaged in theoretical as well as experimental advanced research in different branches of High Energy Astrophysics and Astroparticle including Cosmic Rays. The Centre has a collaborative research programme with the Bose Institute, Kolkata with an objective of studying Cosmic Ray at High Altitude. The Scientists of the Centre are also involved in different National Science Projects.

The Computer Centre up-gradaded the Wi-Fi Connectivity infrastructure for Research Scholars and Post-Graduate Hostels, Installation of Licensed Software versions at various Academic Departments were done Formatting and up-gradation of the Operating Systems, Minor repairing and Maintenance of the Computers, University LAN and providing related accessories for uninterrupted Internet facilities to the users were some of their activities. An Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of University of North Bengal which was established on 10th July 2003 with 16 members with the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor as the Chairman and the Director-member Secretary as the Coordinator of IQAC, the Cell is in the process of developing realistic and attainable quality bench marks for each of the Academic and Administrative activities.

The Central Library has received grants of Rs. 14,37,200/- from UGC, New Delhi for the purpose of the Digitization of Theses and setting up of ETD Lab of Shodhganga for submission of Electronic Theses. In addition to the M.Sc. Course in Tea Science which is only offered by our University in India, One year Post-Graduate Diploma Course is running under the Department of Tea-Science, NBU. The department has also distinction of conducting Tea Board sponsored Training Programme for the Small Tea growers of North Bengal, Bihar and Sikkim, 3 months training programme etc.

We have a Soil Testing Laboratory approved by Tea Board under the department of Tea Science. The University of North Bengal was established by an Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962 with the mission “ to encourage and provide for instruction for teaching, training and research in various branches of learning and course of study; to promote advancement and dissemination of knowledge and learning and to extend higher education to meet the growing needs of society. ”

The University of North Bengal campus covers an area of nearly 331 acres of land at the foothills of high Himalaya in close proximity of vast plains around it with a fascinating glimpse of the Kanchenjunga peak, tea gardens and forest cover. The University of North Bengal has acquired 36.138 acres of land and has already started setting up another campus at Jalpaiguri by the side of the campus of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College for widening the dimension and scope of Higher Education and Research in one more Centre for Higher Education through modern studies for spreading advancement of learning in various branches of Humanities, Science and Technology in order to reach the people of this region in a bigger way so that they can have better and easier access to Higher Education.

The University of North Bengal, since its inception in 1962, has been fulfilling the objectives of imparting higher education and research to the people of this socio-economically backward area of the country. With the global advancement and requirements in the arena of higher education and research, the University has shouldered the responsibility of dissemination of knowledge by judicious expansion of its role in advanced, non-conventional, applied and job-oriented fields keeping the quality of education at par with global standards at low cost.

The University has taken initiatives in qualitative growth by way of achieving excellence. The Departments are well-equipped with research programmes from various agencies and have received academic distinctions and recognitions.

Besides teaching and research, we are not running behind in associating ourselves to cater to the social needs and responsibilities. The Centre for Women’s Studies has organized the International Women’s Day in collaboration with the Clinical Legal Aid, Department of Law, University of North Bengal, Gitaldaha Bikash Samity, Dinhata, Coochbehar an NGO working on Women’s issues and G-NESEP, Madarihat, Alipurduar, working on Tea Garden Women. The Centre for Differently Abled Persons focuses on the redressing issues of discrimination and exclusion of differently abled persons primarily students & employees of the University of North Bengal. The Centre by its activities promotes inclusion among diversities without any discrimination. In short, it is an effective platform for their career advancement as well as successfully harmonizing among themselves. This Centre is a prime example of harmony and brotherhood based on the principle of mutual respect.

The students of the Department of Mathematics organized Blood Donation Camp on 5th April, 2013 (contribution- 130 units) in the Department. 5th Annual Prize & University Blue Distribution Ceremony was held on 26th March, 2015 where Bhaichung Bhutia was the Renowned Nation Football player and Padmashree. The Guest of Honour was Arjuna, Mantu Ghosh, Renowned Table Tennis player. Three nos. of players were felicitated as University Blues. Sports Scholarship was given to 89 nos. of best players of our affiliated colleges. Cash Award of Rs. 45,000/- was given to the Best Performing College. The Sports Board of University of North Bengal organized the 3rd year Cycle Safari Programme for 4 days, one day Adventure Trek for the girls. 37 girl students trekked around 12 kms at the hills of Latpuncture, Inter University Tournaments: Athletics, Badminton (M&W) Cricket (M), Football (M), Kho-Kho (M & W), Table Tennis (M & W), Coaching Camps etc.

The Centre for Studies in Local Languages and Cultures has organized various Workshop i.e. Rajbanshi – Bangla – English Dictionary Project in collaboration with ERLC, Bhubaneswar, Dotara, Dhimal Folk Dance, Lahankari Folk Song, Tamang Folk Dance (Damphu), Rabha Folk Dance and also organized Folk Festival International Seminar etc.

The Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum of North Bengal University has received a good number of valuable Indo-British silver coins from Kharibari Police Station. The Museum has also collected rare manuscripts, some paper currencies etc. from the donors. These invaluable collections will help the Students and Researchers of North Bengal in years to come. The Museum at present has emerged as one of the favoured destinations of visitors from different parts of India and some even from China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan and other countries now visit the Museum. During this period (April, 2013 to March, 2014) more than 8,000 visitors came to the Museum.

University has a 40- acre tea plantation where students get hands on training. Every week the students of Tea Science are taken to various tea gardens for gaining practical knowledge. As per the curriculum, the M.Sc. students need to stay 15 days and the PGDTM students 30 days in a tea garden as a Residential Training. Under the department of Zoology a Centre named “Fisheries and Training Centre” have been established. Studies on Ornamental Fishes and Integrated Fish Farming in the hills of Darjeeling and plains of North Bengal. Further field extension programmes have been executed in the field of Aquaculture.

The UGC Human Resource Development Centre organized and conducted 04 Orientation Programme for newly appointed College/ University Teachers and 15 Refresher courses for serving teachers in this region and 01 short term course for Officers, Principals and Non-Teaching Staff. In this year 2013-14, one construction of Infrastructure was undertaken in the campus of the University of North Bengal by State Government fund.
