University Computer Centre is serving as a central hub for IT related services on the campus since 1983 to meet the academic and research needs of the academic community of the University, including students and researchers. This state-of-the-art establishment got renamed as Centre for Information and Resource Management (CIRM) in 2020.
Keeping education and research in sync with modernization, NBU has been leveraging ICT as a tool to induce strategic improvement and changes in both academic and administrative practices. The CIRM plays an important role in creating an enabling environment for teaching-learning, research and governance. All activities related to ICT implementation is governed by a well formed IT Policy.

Responsibility of CIRM
In partnership with authosised ICT vendors, CIRM offers the help, support and advice required to keep IT working across the University academic and administrative departments on 24 X 7 basis, including the smart campus support.
CIRM help University's teaching and learning community get the most from IT for teaching and learning, and promote innovative use of learning management environment, cutting-edge technologies for teaching on virtual platform.
CIRM offers a huge range of customised IT trainings for academics, students and staff in our state-of-the-art IT learning environment. CIRM provides advice and support to researchers in planning, delivering and disseminating research.
CIRM works to make sure that all IT services keep to a high standard of information security in accordance with latest Information Security standards. Authorization to access University information must follow the University IT policy.
CIRM provides a centrally managed enterprise class campus wide network is most effective and efficient method for achieving University’s goals in information transport. Current bandwidth is more than 1 GBps.
CIRM is responsible for design, develop and maintain the entire website, and is liable to coordinate all the matters related to governance of the website and its content, following the Web Development & Management Policy.
CIRM information system portfolio ranges from core IT services and business applications to IT innovation in research. The MIS road-map advocates for in-house development with a formal project management approach.
CIRM houses a high performance computing cluster with 20 head nodes and 20 computing nodes, centrally used by researchers from University LAN and from external network using pre-configured VPN client.
To promote collaboration among academic and administrative staff of the University, CIRM has implemented Google Suit for education with the premiere facility of institutional emails for all academic stakeholders.
To access University subscribed resources from any geographies, CIRM provides access through NBU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) clients to the centrally-provided service only, to authorized users over Secure Socket Layer.
University does not allow any pirated/unauthorized software installation on the computers connected to the university network. CIRM takes care of installation of licensed software subscribed centrally by the University.
CIRM executes the procurement process of IT equipment and peripherals through GeM portal with the aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, speed using the tools of e-bidding, reverse e-auction and demand aggregation.

Data centre is an IT functional facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as communications and storage systems. University of North Bengal designed and implemented the Data Centre, for this purpose and to conduct different online activities under the direct control of CIRM.
It keeps high standards for assuring the integrity and functionality of its hosted computer environment. This is accomplished through redundancy of cooling (Precision AC) and heavy-duty online power backup systems (including emergency backup power generators) serving the data center along with fiber optic cables on 24 X 7 basis through campus LAN or VPN.
The University Network is an infrastructure of electronic and optical distribution hardware, control software, and wired and wireless media. The University network utilizes various technologies to transport data. The University network begins at the point where an end-user device gains access to this infrastructure and ends at the point where the University network attaches to external non-NBU networks.
A connected campus with ubiquitous access of internet is the backbone of ICT infrastructure. The entire University campus has a Fiber Optic LAN distributed throughout the campus. Central planning and management of the network, not only ensures effective and efficient method for achieving University’s goals in information transport, but also guarantee that the network infrastructure is constructed and operated in an integrated, and optimized fashion.
A phase wise installation of Campus Wi-Fi system is in progress to the startegically identified locations. The plan is to make the internet accessible to located at any corner of the campus.
As of now, the Wi-Fi facility is available at all hostels, Library, guest houses, administrative buildings and some of academic department and centre. All stakeholders including Students, Scholars, Faculties, Officers and Non-teaching staffs can avail the facility using their individual authentication token.
The North Bengal University has an installation of a HPC Cluster on Power architecture and built on the CentOS platform. The HPC cluster is used by various departments of the university for learning, research and execution of high resource consuming applications by faculty and research students.
This cluster is configured with one Head node and storage Node and twenty-eight of Compute Node with 150 TB Storage Space. All compute nodes and head node are connected with Infiniband PDR cluster interconnects with 100GB bandwidth for each node and head node.
In order to ensure quality and effective education in the Rajarammohunpur and Jalpaiguri Campus, University of North Bengal had been established 33 nos Smart Classroom under RUSA scheme in many academic departments. Implentation smart classrooms make the teaching and learning process more effective, as teachers are getting more time to interact with the students.
University of North Bengal has set up virtual classroom in 25 departments to enhance online learning environment which allows for live interaction between the faculty and the students as they are participating in learning activities. In other words, the virtual classroom is a shared online space where the students and the teacher work together simultaneously.
A sophisticated, intelligent IP Based CCTV Surveillance system has been installed at every geographical corner of the University campus. The system is based on Client-Server architecture. A total No of 200+ cameras are in operation 24x7 and live feeds are being monitored from a central control facility under the supervision of University Watch and Ward department.
Cameras are located at strategic points on the campus, principally at the entrance and exit point of sites and buildings. No camera are hidden from view and all are prevented from focusing on the frontages or rear areas of private accommodation. No camera are covering any toilet, wash rooms, anti-chambers, and change room which may hinder privacy to any citizen getting access to any private or confidential information.
UIMS Roadmap
Project Trainee
Research Project
Multi-scale modelling of two dimensional materials and their van der Waals heterostructures and composites for application in next generation metal-ion batteries.(SERB PROJECT)
Through amalgamation of a variety of ab-initio, semi-empirical tight binding and classical force field methods, and also by developing new methods and techniques computer simulations regarding electrochemistry of cell components (ions, electrodes, separators, and solvents) would be carried out. Employing machine learning techniques to materials discovery the most promising 2D materials, their heterostructures or composites would be identified and collected to form a comprehensive online interactive database. Thereafter through semi-empirical tight binding (e.g. DFTB) parameterization and subsequent DFTB-Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, we would look to model cell chemistry at a much larger scale starting from the electrochemistry at anode/cathode to the solid electrolyte interface , in-medium (solvent, additive) ion dynamics and also the safety and life-cycle and reliability modelling aspects in the proposed electrochemical cells.
