The Centre for Adult Continuing Education [CACE], University of North Bengal commenced functioning from August 1987 with financial assistance received from the University Grants Commission. The Centre was upgraded into an academic Department in April 2005 under UGC 10th Plan Guidelines. The name of the Department was Department of Adult, Continuing Education, Extension & Field Outreach [DACEEFO]. As per the Eleventh Plan Guidelines of UGC and the decision of the North Bengal University Executive Council, the Department has become a full-fledged Department with full academic status under the University of North Bengal. The nomenclature has been changed as the Department of Lifelong Learning & Extension (DLLE) in October, 2009. From its inception, the thrust of the Department has been the expansion of the third dimension of higher education in Northern part of West Bengal by meeting regional need of Adult Education, Continuing Education, Population Education, Health Education, Environmental Education and Rural Development Education as well as by taking up several successive educational extension and outreach activities that extend far beyond the traditional academic programmes delivered through the University system. Along the line of the major goals of the department stipulated by the UCC, the department started imparting formal education besides the basic thrust of reaching the community in the form of Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development and Extension Education in the year 2006. Then, from 2011, the department, catering to the needs of the society, started regular M.A. Programme in Rural Development.
