The motto of the department is to make a good amalgamation of theory and practical courses. Thus the department has been made equipped with PD professional cameras, a couple of SLR digital cameras along updated editing softwares. The department has two labs, one for the desktop printing and one for editing audio visual projects. There are good number of computers in the DTP lab and several desktops along with iMac machines in the audio visual lab.
The department has been conducting regular practical classes on cinematography and video editing, newspaper designing and so on. The students prepare a vox pop, radio spots, design a newspaper etc. The students are also given hands on training in making house journals and print advertisements by visiting the local corporate companies based on Siliguri. The students approach these companies and create their own house journal and print advertisements based on the gathered information.
The department conducts visit to the AIR at Kursiong, Doordarshan Kendra at Fulbari, Jalpaiguri and Siliguri based FM stations like RED FM, Radio Misty etc every year. The vertical extension of the building has accommodated a seminar room, an audio visual lab and a reading room. The students mostly do their class projects like recording and editing radio spots, editing films and documentaries in this audio visual lab. The reading room has books and dissertations of previous years for reference purpose along with 5 newspapers in different languages which can be accessed by the students anytime. Students direct, shoots and edits short films/documentaries as a project. A student’s film festival ‘Bioscope’ is organized to screen the films made by the students. This platform has been initiated to showcase the talent and creativity of the students.
Apart from regular theory and practical classes, the class routine also schedules a Media Club every Friday where various activities are planned to involve the students from practical classes. Every Friday a new topic or an activity like photography competition, interview techniques, classic movie screening with a discussion or designing a magazine etc are held. The upgraded syllabus includes a study tour to be conducted within the country which includes a visit to the various media organization and diverse community of those regions.
The students will be able to apply current communication and media theories and skills for promoting mass communication, identify the role played by social and digital media and also to demonstrate critical , analytical , research competence in the study of communications
The students get exposed to research ethics, ways to avoid plagiarism and all aspects of research methodology in concerned discipline.
