The Department of Political Science is one of the oldest Departments with which North Bengal University began to cater to the needs of higher education in North Bengal and Sikkim since 1962. At present, the strength of the faculty members stands at thirteen (Three positions vacant) with five Professors, three Associate Professors and two Assistant Professors. The number of Postgraduate students is 136 (68 in each year). The Department provides for admission of M Phil and PhD students to the Departments. A substantial number of scholars are pursuing their research works under the departmental PhD programme. The Faculty actively train teachers at the college level through workshops, refresher courses etc. at regular intervals. The Department also collaborates with the Centre for Himalayan Studies for the M.A. programme on Strategic & Area Studies , teaching of P.G.Diploma in Rural Development, Education & Extension with the Department of Lifelong Learning and research activities of the Centre for Women’s Studies, NBU.
The projects completed by the faculty members of the Department have established the fact that it has the capability to handle the pressing problems of the society. In recognition of its research potential the Department was brought under UGC’s Special Assistance Programme for the period 2009-2014. Further, the Department was sanctioned the Centre for Nehru Studies in 2007-2008 and the Centre of Gandhian Studies in 2008-2009 by the University Grants Commission.
The learners get research foundation for doctoral degree
The learners will have mastery over current state of the discipline and adequate research competence through compulsory course on research Methodology and field work. They will be demonstrate knowledge of concepts and theories relevant to social science in general and specialised areas of Indian politics, international relations and public administration in particular.. They will have necessary skillset for field research and administrative works.
The students get exposed to research ethics, ways to avoid plagiarism and all aspects of research methodology in concerned discipline.
