UNIVERSITY OF NORTH BENGAL
Department of Zoology was established in 1984. Prior to the inception of the Department of Zoology, there was a centre for Life Sciences initiated by the end of 1976 and beginning of 1977 by the University of North Bengal to develop research activities in this area focusing the local problems. It had four research laboratories: Ecology & animal behavior, Medical Botany, Cytogenetics and Immunology & Cell Biology. With untiring and constant efforts of the four faculties of the Centre for Life sciences and the university authority, Master’s courses in Zoology along with Botany, were opened under the aegis of Centre for Life Sciences in 1984. Presently, the Department has seven faculty members and 4 secretarial and laboratory personnel. The Department has earned high accolades with the awards of DST-FIST (2006 to 2011 & 2012-17) and UGC-SAP (2007-12 & 2013-18) apart from independent research projects sponsored by almost all funding authorities of Government of India. The Department has identified itself in the specialized fields of (i) Insect pest management including resistance status of tea pests and biopesticide development (ii) Ecology and impact of pollutants/pesticides on aquatic biota including fish fauna (iii) Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in study of human health at chromosomal and DNA levels (iv) Studies on Fish Endocrinology, Fish Physiology, Fish reproduction and fish nutrition (v) HLA and Tumour Biology (vi) Immunological study & status of tea workers and population dependent on tea industry (vii) Molecular Virology and so on. The Department has established a Fisheries Research and Training Centre for applied researches pertaining to fishery and aquaculture as well as to provide hands on training to the farmers. The Department has produced more than sixty Ph.D. scholars; most of them have been placed in responsible positions in teaching, research, corporate and governmental services. The faculty members have been honoured by various awards such as FNA Sc, FZSEI, FZS(Calcutta), DBT National Associateships, Overseas Associateship, INSA Exchange Collaborateship, State honors for book writing etc. Scientific contributions of the faculty members in terms of project investigations and publications have attained an enviable position.
